Alaska Fish and Game and the City of Valdez have been working for the past 6 years to build a King (Chinook) Salmon fishery. The past couple of years we have seen more fish returning. These fish can be very large (up to 50 pounds), but they average about 20 pounds. The primary season for them is May, but they can be caught throughout the summer and are sometimes caught as by-catch while we are fishing for silvers in August. King salmon fishing is an all-day affair, whole boat charter only. Be advised, you may fish all day and not catch one, or catch your limit of 2 per person in a half hour. With these big guys you never can tell!
Pink (humpback) salmon fishing is around the 4th of July. They start showing up in late June and will be around for most of the summer. This is the primary fishery for our commercial fleet and you can see the seiners fishing the narrows as we head out on a halibut trip. Fishing for Pinks is done either drifting or at anchor with light tackle and is usually a half day charter.
